STOWAWAY
Memory is a structuring concern in M∞ exploration of borders and spaces beyond body, time and death. Dedicated to researching, gathering, metabolising, alchemising, integrating and then releasing both existing and emerging individual human digital traces into eternity, the M∞ ground crew has made yet another step towards crossing the deadline. The creation process of ARCANUM CAPSULES was crystallised, expanded and hacked by developing the concept of STOWAWAY PASSENGER ENCAPSULATION.
The STOWAWAY ENCAPSULATION concept explores what happens when etoy.AGENTS accompany random STOWAWAY PASSENGERS rather than carefully chosen etoy.PILOTS during the encapsulation. What gets stored and what lost when passengers actively intervene into the creation of ARCANUM CAPSULES?
In 2009, ENCAPSULATION workshops have been joyfully conducted in Amsterdam/NL, Abruzzo/IT (Pollinaria) and Heiligkreuz/CH. In three different architectural, cultural and conceptual settings, mis-en-scèned into the workshop spaces, the etoy.GROUND-CREW have enabled interested public, that is STOWAWAY PASSENGERS, to construct and preserve unique digital 32 MB self-portraits or MINI ARCANUM CAPSULES of themselves. The capsules serve as storage places for creation, collection, dispersal, destruction or celebration of chosen electrical memory and emotional dust. In this experimental artwork, etoy makes itself no more than a loan of its labour and infrastructural capabilities in allowing the PASSENGERS to pledge certain memories into the future.
The STOWAWAY PASSENGERS from Amsterdam, Pollinaria and Heiligkreuz, allowed therefore their ARCANUM CAPSULE IDs to get attached to the data that could be stored in open formats. In this process, the MINI CAPSULES, created together by etoy.GROUND CREW AGENTS and PASSENGERS have become swollen with hyperlinks, images, ASCII notes, voice samples, electrocardiograms, their dead parents, past lovers and estranged sisters. The capsules carry political programmes, musical compositions, websites, academic papers, images of cytoblast, steroids and biochemical analysis.
Once created the MINI ARCANUM CAPSULES are jacked into the MISSION ETERNITY STOWAWAY STORAGE – the system that aspires eternal preservation, fertilization and fermentation of data through endless processes of its copying and sharing in the ANGEL network. The MINI ARCANUM CAPSULES start orbiting time and space immediately after their creation, as opposed to PILOT ARCANUM CAPSULES, which get finalised and released in the event of death.
The motivation behind the project is to research and learn more about contemporary electronic memory culture. For some reason, not yet entirely understood or articulated, etoy has particularly attracted PASSENGERS willing to share memories and fantasies of contemporary countryside, bull rearing, boars and cats! Needless to say, etoy celebrates all explorations of intimate spaces of memory and all kinds of experimental entities. M∞ encapsulations set the parameters and conditions for future connection and communication – beyond the spaces experienced and known.
